Random Compositions, series started 2009
various dimensions
ink, polypropylene, polystyrene, paper, wood
The Random Composition works join conventionally divergent approaches to artistic production: the monochrome, photography and sculpture. Every aspect of each Random Composition is determined by a randomly drawn option and all of those aspects are drawn simultaneously to determine the appearance of the work. The aspects that comprise the Random Compositions are: height, width and depth; the color of the monochrome on the face; and the four images that are shown on the sides, top and bottom of the sculpture. These images are drawn from my archive of over 100,000 notational photographs, incorporating as wide a range of subjects as possible. The title indicates the number in the series and the number of drawings taken before acceptance of this combination of characteristics (e.g. Random Composition 5-69 means this piece is the 5th made of the series and that there were 69 combinations drawn prior to acceptance.)
